Time for another Authorology Lab! This time, were taking something real and turning it into fantasy.
The natural world is full of amazing sights and sounds. Sometimes it’s fun to ignore the real explanation and think up an imaginary one instead. People have been doing it for centuries. Across many cultures, there are legends about how the tiger got its stripes and why the owl cries “Who?” in the night.
If you keep your eyes and ears open for curiosities all around, you can think of all kinds of fantastical stories to explain them. For example, take a look at this frosty little fellow. Who and what do you think he is?
During the cold winters, the wood frog becomes a frog-cicle. It stops breathing, and its heart stops beating. When spring arrives, the frog thaws and returns to normal, hopping along its merry way! That’s the real story. You can read more about it on the National Geographic website.
But set all that nonfiction aside for a moment. What if this little guy is a character in a fantasy story? What kind of creature is he? What is his world like? What is his problem and how will he solve it? That story is begging to be written…by you!
